Trauma: Finding the Way Forward

What is Trauma?

Trauma is the emotional response to a distressing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope. Trauma can come about as a result of a variety of experiences such as abuse, neglect, violence, near death experiences, chronic poverty, food instability, natural disasters, discrimination and others. The effects of trauma can be long-lasting if left unaddressed.

Types of Trauma

Acute Trauma: This type of trauma can manifest after a single, sudden distressing event. Such as a car accident, a natural disaster, or witnessing violence.

Complex Trauma: This can happen after many incidents of trauma throughout a prolonged period of time or throughout the lifespan.

Secondary Trauma: Also called vicarious trauma, occurs after witnessing others experience a traumatic event, hearing people recall vivid traumatic incidents, and experiencing trauma indirectly.

The Impact of Trauma

Trauma can cause symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression, dissociation, among others. If left untreated, trauma can affect many areas of a person’s life including interpersonal relationships, work, and home life.

Navigating the Healing Journey

Luckily, trauma is treatable. Seeking trauma-informed mental health professionals such as a therapist and psychiatrist can go a long way in supporting a person in their healing journey. When healing from trauma, it is essential to take care of yourself by eating regularly, staying hydrated, and exercising. Engaging in calming activities such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can help mitigate some of the symptoms of trauma.
